Season of change

It’s been exactly a week since arriving in Guinea, unloading onto the port and walking up the gangway. This weekend I’ve been back down the gangway and to the port twice to wave crew off who’ve finished their field service and are going home for Christmas. It’s only been a week yet friendships are formed quickly when you live in a tin can and it’s never nice to say goodbye to someone who made you feel so welcome when you knew nobody.
Saddest goodbye to my lovely cabin mate Lindsay, she shared her space, wardrobe and food, coped with me dropping things on top of her, swinging off the top bunk and practising my American accents. You’re a wonderful human and God has good things in store, all the best!
My weekend up to this point was a happy one. Saturday morning I ventured into town and the local markets. Other than nearly being mowed down by motor bikes and taxis it was a pleasant experience. We looked around stalls, bought some screws for the ship (just making sure it’s holding together) and got complimented on our French speaking in a café! The rest of the weekend was spent chatting with friends, making new friends and of course visiting the patients .
Even if you’re not working the kids love to see you! Today they had all their plaster casts checked and overwarapped with funky coloured bandages, they were chuffed! They also want a photo with you at every opportunity whether you’ve looked after them or not. You can’t help but smile and little do they know, you feel so blessed by them.
Week 1 survived with flying colours (if I say so myself) x
